A nagging toothache can be one of the most excruciating and sleep-disrupting pains one can experience. The throbbing discomfort can make it nearly impossible to get a good night’s sleep. While the best course of action is to call your emergency dentist as soon as possible, we understand that sometimes, you need relief right away. In this blog post, we’ll provide you with some tips to help ease the pain and hopefully get you some much-needed sleep until you can see your dentist!
Rinse with Warm Salt Water
One of the quickest ways to temporarily alleviate a toothache is by rinsing your mouth with warm salt water. Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water, then swish the solution around your mouth for about 30 seconds. Saltwater helps reduce inflammation and can provide temporary relief from pain. Be sure not to swallow the mixture, and repeat as needed throughout the night.
Over-the-Counter Pain Medication
Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help reduce toothache pain. Follow the dosage instructions on the label and consult your dentist or pharmacist if you have any concerns about medication interactions or allergies. Remember – these medications only offer temporary relief and are not a long-term solution.
Use a Cold Compress
Applying a cold compress to the outside of your cheek near the affected area can help numb the pain and reduce inflammation. Wrap some ice in a cloth or use a cold pack and gently press it against your cheek for 15-20 minutes at a time. Make sure to have a thin cloth or paper towel between the ice and your skin to avoid frostbite.
Elevate Your Head
Elevating your head while sleeping can help reduce blood flow to the head and alleviate some of the pressure on your tooth. Try using an extra pillow or sleeping in a slightly upright position to see if it provides relief.
Clove Oil
Clove oil has natural analgesic properties and can help numb the area around the painful tooth. Soak a cotton ball in clove oil and apply it gently to the affected area. Be cautious not to use too much, as it can be strong and may cause irritation if it comes into contact with other parts of your mouth.
Avoid Trigger Foods and Drinks
Certain foods and drinks can exacerbate toothache pain, especially those that are extremely hot, cold, sweet, or acidic. Try to avoid these trigger foods and beverages, including ice cream, hot coffee, citrus fruits, and sugary snacks, until you can see your dentist.
Maintain Good Oral Hygiene
While you’re waiting to see your dentist, it’s crucial to maintain good oral hygiene to prevent the worsening of your toothache. Gently brush and floss your teeth, being careful around the affected area. Avoid harsh brushing that could aggravate the pain.
