If you have gum disease, you certainly aren’t alone. Did you know that nearly half of adults over the age of 30 have gum disease at one severity or another? Fortunately, in its early stages, gum disease can be reversed with excellent at-home care and some help from your dentist. They may recommend that you undergo a procedure called “scaling and root planing.” Here’s how that works and what you should know about its cost.
When Is Scaling and Root Planing Needed?
Gum disease develops as a result of the sticky, white film that builds up on your teeth and along your gum line. This is called “plaque.” Since place is made of bacteria, if it isn’t removed frequently and thoroughly, the gums can become inflamed. Over time, the gums pull away from the teeth, forming pockets. Additional plaque gets trapped in these pockets and cannot be removed with your at-home tools. At this point, you have an infection on your hands, so your dentist will probably recommend scaling and root planing.
How Does Scaling & Root Planing Work?
Scaling and root planing consist of two separate parts, often completed in two appointments. Scaling involves your dentist using dental tools to remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line, cleaning all the way to the bottom of the pocket. Next comes the root planing portion. At this point, your dentist will smooth out the roots of the affected teeth, helping your gums reattach to them and heal.
How Much Does Scaling & Root Planing Cost?
There are multiple factors that play a role in the cost of your gum disease treatment. The main factor is the number of teeth that need to be addressed. The cost can range anywhere from $150 to $450 depending on the severity of your condition. If you have dental insurance, you may receive partial coverage for this procedure. If you don’t have dental insurance and are concerned about the cost of your treatment, you may want to ask your dentist if they accept payments through third-party financing companies, like CareCredit. If you apply and are accepted, the cost of your treatment can be divided into manageable monthly installments with little to no interest.
Scaling and root planing is a great step against gum disease. By investing in your gum health now, you can prevent a future of discomfort, oral health issues, and expensive treatments.
