Undergoing a full-mouth reconstruction is an exciting time in anyone’s life. After all, soon you’ll have a healthy, beautiful, and functional smile that you can be proud to share with the world. But recovering from the procedures involved in your mouth’s makeover can often require some special care. Here’s what you can expect from the healing process from some popular full-mouth reconstruction procedures.
Tooth Extractions
Sometimes you may need preparatory treatment before undergoing a restoration procedure, such as a tooth extraction prior to dental implants. If you need any teeth removed, your dentist will completely numb the area before treatment. Typically, you will experience some swelling and soreness for at least three days, however this pain will gradually begin to lessen as you heal.
To ensure that your recovery stays on track, be sure to follow the after-care instructions from your dentist closely, never drink from a straw, do not smoke, and avoid any strenuous activities for at least a few days. If you notice a fever developing, you lose your blood clot, or your pain worsens instead of improving, call your dentist as soon as possible.
Crowns
Dental crowns require your dentist to remove damaged enamel from your tooth. Though your mouth will be numb before this begins, you may still experience some sensitivity after it wears off. This is only temporary, and should subside when you get your permanent crown, in about two weeks after your impressions are sent to the lab.
Bridges
Like a crown, dental bridges also require your dentist to remove some enamel on the abutment teeth. This could also cause some sensitivity until your bridge is ready to be cemented in place, but will likely dissipate soon after, once your tooth is protected by the restoration.
Dental Implants
Dental implant procedures can range quite a bit from patient to patient. For example, if you need a bone graft, sinus lift, or any extractions, you will need to allow time to heal from those procedures before your dental implants can be placed. Each of these have their own recovery times, typically ranging from three to six months before you are ready for the implants.
Following your dental implant placement, you can expect to recover for several months before you are ready for the abutments. These will require an additional procedure and healing time before you can get the crowns attached, though the healing time for abutments is much shorter than for the implants. Each of these procedures have their own unique requirements and aftercare instructions, so be sure to follow them as closely as possible to ensure that your healing stays on track and your implants successfully integrate.
Remember, full mouth reconstruction can include many procedures that require a bit of recovery after. It is important that you follow your aftercare instructions after each of these treatments, as this will help you heal properly and without complications. Be aware that sometimes complications still arise, but paying close attention to your oral health and notifying your dentist immediately of any changes can help protect your smile and keep you safe and healthy during your recovery!
